Some research already conducted by scientists at University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health to see the correlation between birth weights and vitamin D level during pregnancy.</p>

<p>This study is published online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and explain that the baby&#8217;s birth weight is depend on the level of vitamin D during pregnancy. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy will result lower birth weights. This conclusion is based on 2146 samples of pregnant women who involved in this research,said Senior author Lisa M. Bodnar, Ph.D., MPH, RD, assistant professor in Pitt’s Department of Epidemiology Public Health.</p>
<p>Lead author Alison Gernand, Ph.D., MPH, RD, a postdoctoral associate in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology mentioned that vitamin D deficiency in early pregnancy leads to impaired fetal growth later in pregnancy. Also, it appears that low levels of vitamin D in the first trimester is correlated with 2-fold higher risk of growth restriction in utero. It is important to note that vitamin is deficient in people with darker skin. Researchers found that half of black women and 5% of white women in the U.S. have low levels of vitamin D.</p>

<p>The research conclusions were drawn after Dr. Gernand and her colleagues found that women with vitamin D levels less than 37.5 nmol / L  had children with 46 grams less than their peers at birth. This research is limited to the children born at term that is between 37 and 42 weeks. In addition, it was also found that women who had in the first trimester, that is during the first 14 weeks, low levels of vitamin D  had children with a lower  weight  for gestational age. These babies are called “small for gestational age. “</p>
<p>Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. In humans, vitamin D is unique because it can be ingested as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) or ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and because the body can also synthesize it from cholesterol when sun exposure is adequate (&#8220;sunshine vitamin&#8221;). Therefore, vitamin D supplementation is recommended during the cold season, when there is no sun. After being transported to the liver and then to the kidney, vitamin D becomes active, that is it may exercise its functions to stimulate calcium absorption. But besides the well-known role in phosphocalcic metabolism, it seems that vitamin D has also a role in immunity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc..</p>
<p>Apparently low levels of vitamin D leads to lower birth weights because it affects bone growth in children by preventing the absorption of calcium. It is also likely that  the hormone levels needed to produce fatty acids and glucose for fetal energy needs, are affected too.</p>
<p>Another research shown that obese women have a higher risk of having lower birth weight baby due to Vitamin D deficiency. This research conducted by scientists at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The results show that children born to lean mothers have a vitamin D level about 3 times higher than children born to obese mothers. The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.</p>
<p>The fact that the level of vitamin D is lower in the obese is not new because there have been studies showing this so far. In the study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, it is revealed that both obese and lean women have normal levels of vitamin D in early pregnancy but children born to obese women have lower levels of this vitamin at birth.</p>
<p>L. Jami Josefson, MD, first author of the study, said that almost all pregnant women who participated in the study said they took prenatal vitamins and this may be the explanation for the fact that they had normal levels of vitamin. Josefson said that a possible explanation of the low level of vitamin D in children born to obese women is that it could be stored in adipose tissue.</p>
<p>It should be noted that the study is part of a more extensive project, which aims to highlight the link between birth weight and obesity that may develop later in life. Researchers have sought to analyze vitamin D levels  too because deficiency of this vitamin is linked to many health problems, which include obesity.</p>
<p>Researchers measured vitamin D levels in pregnant women in the last trimester of pregnancy and in babies immediately after birth. There have been taken into account several parameters: body fat, weight, volume of the babies, etc. Josefson said the study revealed that children with high levels of vitamin D also had more body fat, which is a new thing. This finding contrasts with other studies published so far that have shown that the relationship between vitamin D levels and body fat is inverse. In other words, the amount of body fat is correlated with the level of vitamin D.</p>
<p>Josefson added that she is intending to do other studies in order to clarify the role of vitamin D in healthy children: “Obese women may need larger amounts of vitamin D supplementation to provide their babies with sufficient levels of vitamin D while they are in the womb,” she said.</p>
